Battleship (2012) "The Art of War"
Steve Jablonsky’s sonics and recordings for Battleship (2012) (and similarly, Transformers Dark of the Moon, which came out the year before) are some of the best I’ve ever heard in any film score. In this clip starting from 1:23 in “The Art of War,” I love everything going on here from a sonic standpoint - the sounds surround you, there are exciting percussive elements up front and subtle synths for fullness, and there’s incredible depth. The french horn melody here is one of my all-time favorites (tone/EQ wise) of any french horn from any score I can think of. It explodes out of the speakers with great expression, beef and excitement, and it fills up the space in an awesome way.
Recorded and Mixed by Alan Meyerson alongside a team of the best-of-the-best in the business. And Steve Jablonsky is simply a master of blending modern synth stuff with orchestral.
Do you have a favorite-sounding film score or french horn?
